Is it a sin to have gay feelings?

Tom Brown

Bible Answer: It is not a sin to have feelings of same-sex attraction. The sin is acting upon it. For example: nearly every married couple still feels attraction toward others that are not their spouse. It is not a sin for married spouses to have "attraction" toward someone not their spouse. Attraction does not make them adulterers. So having attraction toward those of the same sex does not make you a homosexual. So do not say that you are a homosexual; you are not, unless you live that way.

Let me give you a scripture to back this up: "Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders" (1 Cor 6:9). The condemnation is for homosexual "offenders."

If a person had thoughts of stealing, would they be arrested for their thoughts? Of course not, because they would not be an offender. Only offenders of the law get punished. Temptation comes to all of us; however, that does not make us sinners for having temptation. Even Jesus was tempted, "For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are — yet was without sin" (Heb 4:15). So do not let the devil condemn you by making you think you have sinned by having attraction toward those of the same gender.

Finally, God can heal you from same-sex attraction. While it is normal to have heterosexual attraction; it is not normal to have same-sex attraction. I don't think you have to tolerate these overwhelming feelings. However, you said, "I will never be attracted to women." As long as you believe that lie, you will stay attracted only to men. You have to come to a point in your faith that you believe anything is possible with God. So I recommend you receiving inner healing from homosexual attraction. Find out what happened in your life that may have injured your psyche so badly that you struggle with these feelings.

Read my articles, Can Homosexuals Change? and Homosexuality: Its Cause and Cure. I also have a CD and DVD series on the subject and my book, Breaking Curses, Experiencing Healing, has two chapters on the subject of God's Cure for Homosexuality. I will pray for you.

Follow Up Question: Hello Pastor, in your write-up on homosexuality, you say that if a husband thinks about sex with another women it's not adultery. May I remind you of Matthew 5:28 New Living Translation, "But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart..." I'm sorry, but according to JESUS CHRIST your teaching is wrong.

Follow Up Bible Answer:  Sheryl, I am not talking about "lust" but about "attraction." Those are two very different things. Lust is when you fantasize about having sex with a person not your spouse. That is adultery or fornication in the heart. Attraction is simply recognizing that someone is handsome or pretty in ones' eyes; in other words, nice looking.
