How could Jesus grow in Knowledge if He is God?

Today’s Question: I was reading the Bible when I came across the passage about Jesus growing more in His knowledge of God. How could Jesus learn more about God when He is God? I’m confused!

Bible Answer: The answer is quite simple: Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and although He shares the nature of the Father, He is distinct from the Father, though not divided from Him. He is God the Son, not God the Father. He is the second Person of the God-head.

Not only is Jesus distinct from the Father, but in His incarnation, He emptied Himself of the three attributes of God: omniscience, omnipotence and omnipresence.

“Who, being in very nature God,

did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,

but made himself nothing,

taking the very nature of a servant,

being made in human likeness.” (Phil 2:6-7)

Since He did not retain omniscience while in His body, He thus had to grow in knowledge.

The two mistakes people make in trying to understand the deity of Christ is either they divide the Trinity or they make no distinction between the Three Persons of the Trinity. Your confusion stems from you failing to make a distinction between the Person of Jesus and His Father.

The other mistake is dividing the Persons of the Godhead and thus treating God as three gods.
