Lord of the Flies
By Sonia Brown
Jesus
was driving out a demon that was mute. When the demon left, the man who had
been mute spoke, and the crowd was amazed. But some of them said, "By
Beelzebub, the prince of demons, he is driving out demons.”Others tested him
by asking for a sign from heaven. Jesus knew their thoughts and said to
them: "Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house
divided against itself will fall. If Satan is divided against himself, how
can his kingdom stand? I say this because you claim that I drive out demons
by Beelzebub. Now if I drive out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your
followers drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. But if I drive
out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come to you.(
Luke 11:14-20)
It is springtime. The sun is
shining, the birds are chirping, and the flowers are blooming. With all the
wonderful things that spring brings with it there is one thing that we can
do without and that is flies—those terrible pesky insects.
Two of my youngest kids were out in our
backyard when they were infested with swarms of flies. They were everywhere.
We had a small plastic green house for
growing vegetables last year and because of the moisture maggots that were
nestled in it now turned into flies.
My children were terribly annoyed by those
flies. They were on a mission to kill and destroy. They took out their fly
swatters with persistence and determination to get rid of those wretched
critters.
As I watched them on their quest this
Scripture in Luke came to my mind. You see Beelzebub translated in
the Greek is Lord of the Flies. This name gives us an insight into
the work of Satan. I did a short study on flies and discovered that:
1. Flies are among the most dangerous pests known to
man.
2. Flies are attracted by the odor of garbage or things
rotten.
3. Flies are everywhere. They are among the rich and
poor alike. They are in the king palaces and in lowliest of homes.
If Satan is the Lord of the flies then the
flies would represent the demons that are on the earth. They are dangerous,
demons have come to kill, steal and destroy. They are attracted by garbage
meaning the sins in our lives, and they are everywhere. My husband and I
have prayed deliverance over countless numbers of people—the religious and
non-religious, the affluent and non-affluent, and the young and old alike.
There is good news though. I heard a
minister say that they have never seen a fly sit on a hot stove. If we are
hot for Jesus then we have nothing to fear. Let's keep the flies away and
determine to live a godly life.
